Introductory Workshop and Apprentice Week on Algebraic Statistics

As part of the Fall 2023 long program on Algebraic Statistics and Our Changing World: New Methods for New Challenges, IMSI will host an introductory workshop Invitation to Algebraic Statistics and Applications September 18-22 and a hands-on workshop Apprenticeship Week: Varieties from Statistics aimed at graduate students and beginning postdocs October 2-6. Applications for the Apprentice Week are due by April 30. Travel and lodging support is available for accepted applicants.

Modern Mathematics Workshop

The annual Modern Math Workshop (MMW) will take place October 25-26, 2023, in conjunction with the SACNAS 2023 NDiSTEM Conference. The workshop is organized each year by institutes involved in the Mathematical Sciences Institutes Diversity Initiative (MSIDI). The workshop is a mix of activities including research expositions aimed at graduate students and researchers, mini-courses aimed at undergraduates, a keynote lecture by a distinguished scientist, and a reception where participants can learn more information about the Mathematical Sciences Institutes.

The MMW is intended to encourage undergraduates from underrepresented groups to pursue careers in the mathematical sciences, and to build research and networking opportunities among undergraduates, graduate students and recent PhDs. Funding is available to cover travel and lodging for participants in the MMW, as well as to fund registration fees, travel, and lodging for MMW participants who also wish to attend the SACNAS NDiSTEM conference. It is not necessary to attend the NDiSTEM conference to attend or request funding for the MMW.

The application for the MMW and applications for Research Presentations and Travel Scholarships through SACNAS are now open.

New NSF Program: Partnerships for Research Innovation in the Mathematical Sciences (PRIMES)

The NSF Division of Mathematical Sciences’ Partnerships for Research Innovation in the Mathematical Sciences (PRIMES) program aims to enhance partnerships between minority-serving institutions and DMS-supported Mathematical Sciences Research Institutes. The activity seeks to boost the participation of members of groups underrepresented in the mathematical sciences through their increased involvement in research programs at the institutes.

PRIMES proposals may be submitted by minority-serving Institutions of Higher Education in the United States that award degrees in the Mathematical Sciences that are not currently classified as a Doctoral University with "Very High Research Activity" (R1 institutions) according to the latest Carnegie Classification update. The PI must be a faculty member at the minority-serving institution, and a co-PI must be identified and be a Director, Associate Director, or equivalent, at a DMS-supported Mathematical Sciences Research Institute.

The PRIMES activity increases diversity through building and growing research capacity and output in the mathematical sciences at minority serving institutions by supporting members of a math/stat department at an MSI through year-long research leaves, during which time participants visit one of the DMS-supported research institutes (for a thematic program, for workshops of any length, or for a long-term stay).

A PRIMES award is a two-year grant that will defray the costs of: (a) a one-year replacement at the MSI for each faculty member participating, (b) the institute's cost of the faculty participation in the institute program, (c) up to 2-months salary per year for the participating faculty member, as well as (d) the costs of additional travel and lodging for the faculty member. The activities are to be scheduled so that the faculty member first participates in programs at the research institute and subsequently has an opportunity to complete and write up resulting work. Additionally, during the second year of the award, the faculty member receives support for travel to work with collaborators as well as for up to 2-months salary. The award also allows the possibility to defray the costs for a postdoctoral associate, graduate student, or undergraduate student from the MSI to participate in (parts of) the programs at the research institute.

The target date for proposals is May 26, 2023, and awards are expected to begin during the 2023-24 fiscal year.

IMSI Seeks Proposals for Scientific Activity

IMSI is currently seeking proposals for long programs, workshops, interdisciplinary research clusters, and other scientific activity with a deadline of March 15, 2023. Information about how to submit proposals can be found on the proposal overview page and the resources linked therein. There are currently openings for long programs in 2025-26 and beyond, and openings for workshops in the winter of 2024 and beyond. IMSI holds two proposal cycles per year, with deadlines of March 15 and September 15.

Carry the Two Collaboration with AGU's Third Pod from the Sun

IMSI's podcast Carry the Two will be collaborating with the American Geophysical Union's podcast Third Pod from the Sun on a special, crossover mini-series. Using interviews from six researchers who spoke during IMSI's 2022 fall long program Confronting Global Climate Change, each podcast will cover different aspects of climate change research - from the mathematical to the geophysical. The collaborative mini season will start May 9th, so don't forget to subscribe to both shows so you don't miss out!
